Experiencing the Liturgy

Orthodox Choir
August 12, 2025

- Laura Pavalis -

In the Protestant churches, the choir enhances the service by learning various pieces of religious music. Some are modern, some are classical, and there can be many forms of accompaniment, from a Piano to a rock band. The music is selected based on the preferences of the choir director and it is performed at set times during the service.

The role of the choir in an Orthodox Church is deeper. It isn't simply a pleasant addition to the liturgy; it is a component of the spiritual life and theological framework of Orthodox Christianity. The voices joined in hymns and responses don't merely provide a musical backdrop; they help to create an atmosphere of reverence. The Orthodox Liturgy is not only heard. Instead, it is experienced through all the senses in a way that engages the soul.

The choir serves as the voice of the congregation, offering prayers and hymns in an expression of devotion to Christ. The lyrics are filled with doctrine - so the songs themselves educate listeners about our faith. The presence of the choir is intended to allow the parish to become further immersed in the mystery of the faith. By listening to the words, the faithful will be drawn into a reflective frame of mind, which opens the heart to the teachings from bible readings and the sermon.

The music itself is not selected by the choir, or the choir director and it is not "performed". Instead, these are harmonies and melodies composed for specific elements of worship, and for specific feast days of the church. Many of these songs are ancient and unchanging, embracing the responsibility to provide true doctrine and theological teachings in a harmonious manner. There are some songs that are repeated in a cycle, other songs that are only sung during certain seasons or even only sung once per year. Additionally, there are places in the service where the choir sings in response to the priest. This is called antiphonal singing, which replicates a divine dialogue and highlights the deep connection between worship, music and faith.

The order of the liturgy is available - a green book you will find in the narthex.  Many of the songs sung by the choir are included in the order of service, and you will get a sense of how the entire service is meant to flow. Becoming familiar with all aspects of the service - the prayers and hymns and blessings - is a rich spiritual journey enjoyed by Orthodox Christians all over the world and throughout history.

If you would like to join the choir, you are welcome to do so. Practices are held on the first and third
Wednesdays of each month at 6:30.
